  • The Columbus Republic reported that American Structurepoint and Hitchcock Design Group were chosen to complete the preliminary design phase for the Bicentennial 1821 Trail in Columbus, Indiana. The project includes the design and schematic design phases, developing a phasing strategy, and creating illustrative graphics for fundraising to pay for the trail expected to cost over $1 million.
  • The Terre Haute Tribune-Star reported that a contract was approved for American Structurepoint to design a traffic signal at the intersection of 25th Street and Margaret Avenue. The traffic signal is needed after the completion of an upgrade of Margaret Avenue between 19th and 25th streets that we designed as well.
  • Modern Healthcare.com and Times of News reported on an American College of Healthcare Executive (ACHE) Congress online event “Rethinking Healthcare Facility Design Post-Pandemic” featuring Healthcare Practice Leader Rob Schoeck. The article quoted Rob twice regarding investing in negative-pressure areas and installing modular headwall rails in patient rooms. (Please see the article appearing elsewhere in the newsletter.)

Newman Road Underpass Project Receives Top Honors from APWA Indiana

Our Newman Road Underpass project is a major award winner! The Indiana American Public Works Association (APWA) named it the 2020 Public Works Project of the Year in Transportation, and the project now moves on to compete for a national APWA award. The project met several award criteria: enhancing public safety, using innovative construction techniques, improving access to the growing Purdue Discovery Park District Aerospace, and providing opportunities for job growth and economic development to the Purdue University and West Lafayette communities.

Project elements included demolishing a 1-lane, 100-year-old, stone-arch railroad bridge structure and using a bridge-slide technique to erect a new modern bridge structure. It also included reconstructing and widening Newman Road from Benson Drive to SR 26 and adding a dual-lane roundabout at SR 26 and Newman Road.

Multiple American Structurepoint disciplines collaborated during design and construction to make this project a reality, including the Maurovich and Olson Road teams, as well as the Bridge, Traffic Engineering, Environmental Services, Civil Engineering, Ohio Road, Land Surveying, and Construction Solutions groups. It also involved work-sharing between the Indiana and Ohio design centers. Congratulations to all involved in the project’s design and construction, and to all those collaborating with Purdue University on the award submissions to the state and national AWPA organizations.

Ohio Project Wins Top Award from ASHE Triko Valley

Our Glendale-Milford Road/Lake Forest Road roundabout project in Blue Ash, Ohio, won the 2020 Donald C. Schramm Transportation Improvement Award for projects costing $5 million and under. The roundabout at the entrance to Summit Park, a regional recreational destination, replaced a two-way, stop-controlled intersection that was too congested to handle the increasing traffic flow in the rapidly developing areas. Project elements included a multi-use path, traffic control, new storm sewer system, lighting, and landscaping.

Three projects from among all entrants were chosen as finalists for the award given by the Triko Valley Section of the American Society of Highway Engineers (ASHE). The chapter’s membership voted the Blue Ash roundabout as the best project after hearing a Zoom presentation given by our very own Tony Lenhart. Congratulations to all who worked on this project and who contributed to the award submittal and presentation!

Recent Promotion News

Congratulations are in order for Ross Nixon, Bob Henricksen, and Nathan Winslow on their recent promotions. Read on for the details.

Ross Nixon – Vice President, Private Sector Services

Congratulations to Ross Nixon on his promotion to the vice president of private sector services. In this new role, Ross will use his operational and relationships to help all our private-sector disciplines grow and become even more successful. Ross will also have a hand in helping to enhance our private-sector sales process as well as responsibility for geographic expansion initiatives. In the last 10 years, American Structurepoint’s private-sector business units have tripled in revenue, and Ross has been a big part of that growth as the Civil Engineering Group has quadrupled in size. Ross’ promotion is an example of the leadership expansion that must occur to respond to the growth we are experiencing. Please congratulate Ross on his promotion and wish him and the company much success in this new role!

Bob Henricksen – Technical Director

Bob Henricksen has been promoted to technical director within our Utility Infrastructure Group as our resident expert in all things hydraulics. Bob joined American Structurepoint in 2007 and has been involved in a wide range of projects ever since. In his new role, Bob will serve as a resource to the entire Utility Infrastructure Group with his diverse technical skills. He will focus on quality management and communicating with our clients, as well as mentoring our less experienced staff. Please join us in congratulating Bob on his new role!

Nathan Winslow – Team Leader

Nathan Winslow has been promoted to team leader in the Civil Engineering Group. Nathan has served two stints at American Structurepoint. He joined the firm in 2006 after graduating from Purdue, then headed west after working here for about a year. Nathan rejoined the company in 2015 as a project engineer and made an immediate impact with his attention to detail and technical knowledge. As a result, he has led some of our largest and most complex civil projects. In his new role, Nathan will be responsible for continuing to build strong client relationships and leading his team in executing a wide variety of site/civil projects. The next time you see Nathan, congratulate him on his new role!

Civil Engineers Kick Off Career Presentations at STEM-Certified High School

A little bit of research by Senior Talent Acquisition Specialist Meagan Perratore led to Josh Cribelar and Tyler Comstock making the first of several American Structurepoint career info presentations at Indiana’s first STEM-certified career center for high school students.

Josh and Tyler talked about their civil engineering careers via Zoom to students attending the Mackenzie Center for Innovation and Technology (MCIT) located in the Metropolitan School District of Lawrence Township in Indianapolis. They presented info about some cool civil projects such as IU Health Bloomington, Delta Faucet headquarters, Grand Park Sports Complex, and the 75th Street Drainage project. They showed tools used in their trade too – Google Earth, Near Map, PowerPoint, and PDFs.

Meagan is working to set up several career sessions at MCIT to introduce students to other civil engineering disciplines in which our firm specializes, as well as career paths in land surveying, construction, and CAD design technology careers. MCIT offers a multitude of real-life experiences that will prepare these students for the world of work. Students complete hands-on internships outside of the classroom to supplement their classroom instruction. Strong partnerships with Ivy Tech Community College, Vincennes University, and Indiana University allow MCIT students to earn college credit for high school coursework, often at little or no cost.

To learn more about the center, watch this video from WISH-TV 8 news. And be ready for Meagan to possibly contact you about future MCIT presentations.

Help Eric Farny Become LLS Man of the Year

American Structurepoint nation – it’s time to support Project Development Director Eric Farny (Indianapolis Road Group) in his quest to become Man of the Year for the Indianapolis region of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS). Last November, we told you that Eric would take part in this fundraiser to raise money for pediatric cancer research in the name of his son, Noah. In June 2019, Noah was diagnosed with diffuse large B-Cell lymphoma. With great doctors and the support of family and friends, Noah rang the bell in October 2019, symbolizing the end of his treatment.

For this campaign, Eric has formed Team NoahStrong with the goal of raising the most money among candidates to earn the LLS Man or Woman of the Year title. All donations are tax deductible. With your support, Eric’s team will not only be granted the opportunity to place Noah’s name on the new LLS Children’s Initiative, but every dollar contributed is a vote for Team NoahStrong and will support LLS research, patient services, advocacy, public and professional education, and community services.

Here are two ways you can help.

  1. Consider making a contribution to Eric’s campaign at https://pages.lls.org/mwoy/in/indy21/efarny.
  2. Help develop ideas or secure a silent auction item/package/experience that can help Eric’s team raise money at the final event gala.

Please reach out to Eric if you have fundraising ideas or have questions.

Don Corson Joins Committee to Update Building and Fire Safety Codes

Change can be a good thing. When it comes to the Indiana building and fire safety codes, change will be a welcome update for designers, contractors, and occupants alike! Building industry design and construction professionals are currently working with state codes based on model code versions that are between 9 and 15 years old (2006 plumbing, 2009 electrical, 2012 building, 2012 mechanical, 2012 fire, 2007 energy conservation). They have grown increasingly frustrated at having to secure variances to incorporate updated technologies and improved practices not properly addressed in these outdated codes. That’s where Senior Project Manager Don Corson (Structural Group, Indianapolis) comes in.

Don was recently appointed as the (only) licensed engineer on a seven-person Code Update Exploratory Committee by the Fire Prevention and Building Safety Commission under the Indiana Department of Homeland Security. The commission had recognized the tension in the industry and after soliciting public comments last November, which were overwhelmingly in favor of updating the codes, they approved the creation of the Exploratory Committee in December. ACEC Indiana nominated Don for the position because of his advocacy for code updates in articles and presentations and his service on their Vertical Committee. The Exploratory Committee will review the existing building and fire safety codes and recommend a plan forward for updating the existing codes. These industry standards for building design and construction will ensure an improved quality of life for the state of Indiana’s communities and people. Thanks for upholding our company mission in an exemplary way, Don!
