Civil Group Volunteers With Servants At Work

The Indy Civil Engineering Group celebrated Giving Tuesday on December 1 by building a ramp for a disabled individual. They volunteered for Servants At Work, or SAWs, an Indianapolis-based nonprofit that provides high-quality wooden ramps for individuals using wheelchairs, scooters, or walkers. Recipients are low-income, permanently disabled men and women. The ramps are transformative for the recipients and their caregivers who regain the freedom to leave their homes more easily thanks to the ramp. Way to go, everyone!

Four Projects Win ACEC Indiana Engineering Excellence Awards

Four American Structurepoint projects are receiving ACEC Indiana Engineering Excellence Awards – with two projects taking the highest award and going on to compete at the national level! Read on for the details.

Bass Road Corridor Project – Honor Award

Our innovative roundabout design with a railroad crossing through it along the Bass Road Corridor in Allen County, Indiana received the highest award possible from ACEC Indiana. Our solution replaced a “K” style intersection that had two skewed railroad crossings. The project improved 4.5 miles of Bass Road and included one other roundabout, widening the Bass Road Bridge over I-69, a multi-use trail, new storm sewers, traffic signage, and curb and guttering. We also provided construction inspection services.

SR 37 Stormwater Drainage Line Project – Honor Award

Designing two primary trunk lines to drain water from four interchanges along the SR 37 Corridor between 126th and 146th Streets in Hamilton County brought American Structurepoint another Honor Award. Reaching depths up to 40 feet, our design used trenchless tunneling methods rarely used in Indiana. The project included a record-breaking, 2,300-foot-long curved microtunnel boring machine run. American Structurepoint provided project and program management, hydraulic design and minor roadway design.

16 Tech Gent Avenue Corridor – Merit Award

The Transportation Group provided roadway design, utility coordination, and project management services for the first new roadway in the 16 Tech Innovation District in Indianapolis. Extending Gent Avenue created an important thoroughfare within the district and opens multiple parcels for future development. The project included sidewalks, streetscape, and the first portion of the multi-use Tech Trail.

IU Simon Music Center Limestone Repairs and Roof Replacement – State Finalist

The Investigative Group’s assessment and restoration of limestone veneer on the IU Simon Music Library and Recital Center at Indiana University Bloomington received a State Finalist award. Our structural engineers conducted a façade condition, recommended repairs and replacements, developed a plan for repairing/replacing the limestone and the steel and masonry backup structural elements behind it and oversaw the construction. The project also included replacing the aging roofing.

Design Center Staff Spread Holiday Cheer

Staff in Columbus, Highland, and Tampa didn’t let COVID-19 stand in the way of volunteering and providing holiday gifts to people in need. Check out the details.

Tampa Volunteers At Holiday Tent

Jose Jarquin (left) and Brian Zimmerman (right) hold up toys at the Holiday Tent warehouse

Our Tampa team organized a Day of Service project December 9 at the Metropolitan Ministries’ Holiday Tent in Tampa. Metropolitan Ministries is a community organization formed by several churches and nonprofits to help the less fortunate. The Holiday Tent is the organization’s marquee outreach event serving 30,000+ families in need of food and toys.

The entire Tampa staff attended, including snowbird guest Rich Zielinski and his wife. With Covid-19 restrictions in place, the Holiday Tent served as a warehouse drive-through with volunteer “shoppers” grabbing toys and food for the customers in need. This year’s tasks included sorting toys, decorating trees, taking inventory, making toy stocking bags, and evaluating donated toys that had some damage. To the team’s surprise, a local TV station came. They took pictures, video, and short interviews. It was only one afternoon, but the folks at Metropolitan Ministries were very grateful for our help! Metropolitan Ministries’ leadership was especially appreciative of our company’s $1,000 donation to help them buy more toys to reach their anticipated 100,000 toy demand. The organization saw a 40% increase in need for assistance in 2020. Overall, it was an awesome team effort to give back to our community!

A few event stats:

  • 20,918 number of toys in the Holiday Tent on our Day of Service
  • 12 American Structurepoint volunteers
  • 1 team = PRICELESS (1990s MasterCard commercial anyone?)

Columbus Donates Gifts and Food

Canned goods destined for Mid-Ohio Food Bank

Columbus staffers continued their support of fulfilling Christmas wish lists of children ages 18 months through 15 years old via the St. Vincent Family Center’s Adopt-A-Family Program. Four families with five children each for a total of 20 children received gifts from American Structurepoint. Shopping went virtual thanks to COVID-19. Tay Lane placed orders via Amazon totaling approximately $2,300. Gifts were delivered directly to the families’ homes. In all, the program matched 800 children with special holiday gifts this season. Employees also participated in a construction industry food drive with Pepper Construction that benefited the Mid-Ohio Food Bank. Employees donated about $400 worth of food items and American Structurepoint’s Community Service program donated another $1,500 to the food bank.

Highland Provides Gifts Galore for Head Start Agency

Gifts ready for delivery

Highland employees came through once again for children served by the Lake Ridge Head Start agency in Gary, Indiana. Twelve employees played shoppers for 20 children. The Head Start program promotes school readiness for children under age 5 from lower-income families through education, health, and social services. Most of the recipients are foster children who would not receive gifts this season if not for the generosity of the Highland employees.

Nolan Mark Writes Articles For Hoosier Surveyor Magazine

Fort Wayne Project Manager Nolan Mark has added “author” to his many talents beyond land surveying. Nolan wrote two articles appearing in the Fall 2020 issue of the Hoosier Surveyor Magazine. Nolan says he moved out of his comfort zone and turned writer to promote the Indiana Young Surveyors Network (IYSN) that he chairs. The group, open to people under age 35 or who have earned their degree within the last 10 years, provides mentorship and support to industry newcomers. Nolan’s first article gives an overview about the IYSN and the second tells of his journey in land surveying. “When you write about what you love, it takes the fear away,” Nolan says. “I enjoyed encouraging others to take the next step in their careers!”

You can read both articles by turning to page 6 at this link. Here’s hoping Nolan’s prose inspires young land surveyors to progress in their profession.
