Four Projects Receive 2022 ACEC Indiana Engineering Excellence Awards

We’ve done it again – scored great results in the ACEC Indiana Engineering Excellence Awards. Four of our projects are receiving awards; two transportation projects received first-place awards and two structural engineering projects received second-place awards. Read on for the details.

Newman Road Underpass Project – Honor Award

Before and after photos of the Newman Road underpass

The Newman Road Underpass project modernized Newman Road from SR 26 to Benson Drive in West Lafayette, replaced a 100-year-old stone arch bridge structure, and improved access and safety to a growing Discovery Park District near the Purdue University campus where high-tech aeronautics research and development occurs. This is the project’s third major award: APWA Indiana named it the 2021 Project of the Year in Transportation and it received the 2021 Indiana Engineering Achievement Award from the Indiana Society of Professional Engineers.

SR 37 and 126th Street Interchange – Honor Award

The interchange upgrade is the first of four projects to address traffic congestion and safety challenges along the SR 37 corridor from 126th Street to 146th Street in Hamilton County. Our design team converted the signalized intersection into a teardrop roundabout interchange and added a pedestrian and bicyclist multi-use path. The new interchange vastly improves traffic flow, relieves traffic congestion, and provides increased safety for pedestrians and bicyclists.

Loeb Stadium – Merit Award

The multi-purpose Loeb Stadium provides a destination attraction for the City of Lafayette. The $22 million facility takes inspiration from the original stadium’s 1940s-era, Art Deco architecture. Architectural precast concrete colonnade, traditional brick facades, and exposed structural steel evoke a historic ambiance and convey a sense of strength, safety, and comfort. Our structural engineers used innovative thinking to use readily available materials and standard fabrication techniques to achieve an aesthetic look at an affordable price for the city.

Infosys Pedestrian Bridge – Merit Award

This new 195-foot-long bridge, comprising a 170-foot span and 25-foot cantilever, connects a renovated parking structure at the former Indianapolis International Airport to the state-of-the-art Infosys US Education Center on the grounds of the former Indianapolis airport terminal. The bridge features unique skewed-arch geometry, a curved plan, and a tapered-elliptical bridge pier, and it serves as an architectural statement piece for the Infosys campus to provide safe passage for Infosys employees and visitors.

A new multi-use trail in downtown Columbus, Indiana marking the city’s bicentennial year broke ground December 28. The $1.7 million extension of the 1821 Bicentennial Trail along First Street from Lafayette Street to Water Street will bring better connectivity and add value to the downtown Columbus area. The trail extension also will include architectural and art elements encompassing the “Common Ground” bicentennial theme. American Structurepoint has teamed with Hitchcock Design Group to provide trail and water main design for the project. We are proud to partner with the Columbus Redevelopment Commission and the city to celebrate 200 years of history and provide another connection in the city’s trail network.

Highland Employees Deliver Holiday Cheer

Highland design center employees spread holiday cheer to clients of the Fair Haven Rape Crisis Center by providing gifts for 20 children ages 2 to 18 years old. The center, located down the street from our design center, serves those affected by sexual assault and human trafficking in Lake, Porter, and LaPorte counties. Highland employees delivered the gifts unwrapped in festive-looking bags; the center has found the wrapping process is an empowering activity for its clients. Project Manager Gina Sessions, who spearheaded the gift-giving spree, says the annual event is a true highlight. “The Highland Design Center Road Group and Construction Solutions Group look forward to shopping for this event every year,” Gina says. “Shopping for others and decorating our Christmas tree fills the office with humility and joy.” Way to go, Highland employees!

Community Service News

The Community Service fund increased by $6,863 in November 2021 and by $6,973 in December 2021. Many thanks to our employee payroll contributors and to the company for providing a dollar-for-dollar match.

Community Service Activities
December was a huge month for Community Service at American Structurepoint! Thank you to everyone who donated, volunteered, and identified recipients for funds.

  • DREAM Alive scholars gave back to their community by shopping for, wrapping, and delivering gifts to community members in need. Volunteers from American Structurepoint helped the teen scholars by shopping with them, hosting a wrapping party at our Indianapolis office, and making deliveries.
  • An “Adult Santa” event was held at the Indianapolis office. Santa and his elves gained information about who has been naughty or nice. The event raised $902 to purchase gifts for children in need via donations and chances on two exciting prizes. Joe Griffith won a reserved table at the company holiday party and Wing Lau won an overnight stay at the Indianapolis JW Marriott.
  • Santa returned to the Indianapolis office on Saturday, December 4 and visited with children whose family members work at American Structurepoint. Priceless memories were created and $334 in donations were received (and have been matched dollar-for-dollar by the company).
  • A festive bake sale at the Indianapolis office raised $642.60 (including the company match) for the community service fund.
  • The Columbus design center hosted a food drive to benefit the Mid-Ohio Food Collective. The 80-person office donated a full box of food, plus $160 in cash (which was used to purchase approximately 210 containers of fruit, vegetables, soup, beans, chili, and macaroni and cheese!)
  • Holiday Mania smashed all previous records!
    • $55,180 raised to benefit our local communities
    • Nearly 150 items donated
    • 2,667 tickets sold to more than 250 participants

Check out how those funds were distributed!

Recent Donations
The community service fund exists to make a difference in our communities. Donations are made to employee-nominated organizations and families. Submit your suggestion today!

American Structurepoint matches each dollar contributed by employees, and careful timing of donations can help your money go even farther. Check out the impact of this donation to the Mid-Ohio Food Collective!

A $2,500 donation was made during “Double Your Donation Day. According to the Mid-Ohio Food Collective staff, our donation will provide the equivalent of $47,500 worth of meals to central Ohio families! To put that in perspective, that’s enough to feed approximately five 4-person families for a whole year.

Project Update: Lafayette Public Safety Building Tops Out

The City of Lafayette celebrated completion of the structural frame installation at the Lafayette Public Safety Building with a topping-out ceremony November 5. The last steel beam was set in place by a father/son team from Ironworkers Local 22; the final beam contained the traditional evergreen tree, American flag, and the City Hall flag. American Structurepoint was the lead designer for the project and provided civil, structural, and architectural services for the 70,000-sft, 4-story building housing the Lafayette Police Department and the City’s 911 Communication Center. The project also includes both internal and external public spaces; a large community room is located on the interior; and a landscaped plaza, atop a portion of the garage, separates the public garage from the 4-story Police Headquarters.

Immediate work on the Public Safety Building includes the construction of the exterior framing and sheathing and roofing to get the building enclosed by year’s end. Once the building is enclosed, interior framing, and mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection work will begin. The anticipated completion of the parking garage is expected in the latter half of 2022 with completion of the Safety Building occurring in Q1 2023.

In her new role, Sarah will take on more responsibility for the management and delivery of projects, including technical direction and quality control on environmental documents, as well as revenue, billing, and developing proposals. Sarah joined American Structurepoint in 2018, with previous experience at the Indiana Department of Environmental Management and as a staff scientist at an environmental consulting firm. During her 19 years here, Bri has developed considerable expertise in NEPA documentation as well as wetland delineation and permitting. She is a highly respected leader in the environmental industry, especially on transportation-related environmental work, and currently co-chairs the ACEC INDOT/Environmental subcommittee.

Megan Irving – Project Engineer, Indianapolis Civil Engineering Group

Megan’s promotion is part of our strategic plan to better serve our clients. In her new role, Megan will be the technical design expert and lead projects while serving as a mentor to our staff engineers and designers. Megan joined the Civil Engineering Group shortly after graduating from the University of Notre Dame in August 2019. She quickly learned the technical components of site design, and her strong skill set in grading/stormwater management design has made her a trusted and vital asset to the team. She also took the initiative to create and develop a Lunch & Learn series to help promote growth and provide another resource for staff engineers and designers.

Tony Lenhart – Team Leader, Columbus Road Group

Tony started in the Columbus office in 2006 and has been with American Structurepoint his entire career. He has helped shape our growth in Ohio as we grew from a dozen staff to over 90 employees located across three design centers. Tony’s hard work and focus on quality and customer service helped us win and retain several key clients. He provides hands-on technical solutions, and his personal relationships with staff and clients is what makes him unique. Tony works hard to energize our staff and make our jobs more enjoyable.

Kyle joined American Structurepoint in May 2021 after spending 20 years with a local Columbus firm. His wealth of design and management experience adds the much-needed capacity that the Columbus Design Center requires for continued successful growth. Kyle’s technical expertise, combined with his outgoing personality, has quickly earned him the trust and respect of the Road Group. Kyle works hard to deliver quality plans and to build trust with co-workers and clients. He is establishing himself as a leader on some of our more complex projects. Kyle has also begun passing on his technical and professional knowledge to the next generation of engineers.

Leigh Stevenson – Senior Environmental Specialist, Indianapolis Environmental Services Group

In her new role, Leigh will be responsible for guiding the technical aspects of ecological work in Indiana, developing environmental documentation, and providing real-time quality control on transportation-related environmental documents. The article praised the roundabouts for saving lives, reducing car crashes, lowering carbon emissions, and saving lives. American Structurepoint provided services for four roundabouts highlighted in the article – Hoagy Carmichael, Old Meridian and North Pennsylvania streets, Keystone Parkway and 116th Street, and 96th Street and Westfield Boulevard. Check out the photos below of our roundabouts that we either designed and/or provided construction inspection services. Angie Frazier To Compete For LLS Woman of the Year

Another American Structurepoint employee soon will be raising funds to fight cancer. In February 2022, Business Development Director Angie Frazier (Indianapolis Design Center) will start her quest to become Woman of the Year for the Indianapolis region of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS). Angie is one of a dozen men and women chosen to participate in the philanthropic campaign running from February 24 through May 7. Angie is campaigning in honor of cancer survivors Finn Stallings (her best friend’s grandson and former LLS Boy of the Year) and close friend Sarah Goddard.

“After witnessing what they and their families struggled through, I want to fundraise to help other patients and families like them,” Angie said. Money raised by campaign participants goes to fund cancer research; help families in need; and support advocacy efforts, patient services, and public and professional education and community services. The man and woman raising the most money in each local community are declared Man and Woman of the Year. As you may recall, Eric Farny was successful in becoming LLS Man of the Year. (Please see the article appearing in this month’s newsletter for info about Eric.)

Be watching the newsletter in 2022 to find out how you can get involved in Angie’s LLS efforts!
