Holiday Mania

Holiday Mania will be held December 7 to 11, 2020. One of the things that makes Holiday Mania so special is that all items are donated by our staff and friends. Our staff have shown their generosity year after year, and we know you’ll rise to the occasion and help populate the event with gifts that you’re excited to share with your colleagues.

Donations of complete packages and amazing individual items are both welcome. If your creativity needs a jumpstart, we have a few ideas to inspire you. Check out this link of suggested items. You can also donate cash for Holiday Mania elves to purchase an item on your behalf.

Please submit donated items by Tuesday, November 17 for inclusion in the shopping catalog.

Electronic purchase options will be available for everyone who wishes to participate in the event! Winners will be able to pick up their package in Indianapolis or Columbus the week after the drawing. (Shipping is available on select packages for staff located in other design centers.)

Santa is Coming to Town!

The big guy will be available for photos at our Indianapolis headquarters on Saturday, December 5. His people are talking to our people about safety protocols, but we’ll have a sign-up sheet available soon.

DREAM Christmas – Volunteers Needed

Volunteer delivery drivers are needed in Indianapolis on the morning of Saturday, December 5 to help fulfill holiday wishes. The DREAM Alive organization is continuing their tradition of providing holiday gifts to families in need. As in previous years, student scholars will be leading the shopping and gift packaging, but gifts will be dropped off at each recipient’s home to minimize contact rather than distributed at a party. If you can be a delivery driver (or if you’re willing to provide backup for shopping and wrapping tasks), please contact Michele Collins.

Recent Activities

Shop Local 2020: Our employees gave back to businesses in their neighborhoods by consciously shopping local during October. Staff reported visiting more than 100 restaurants and nearly 40 other businesses during the three-week challenge! Maureen Walker (Marketing Services) from our Indianapolis headquarters had her name drawn for $100 worth of gift certificates to local restaurants, and Conner Brintlinger (Business Development) from our Columbus design center was the winner of a $100 American Express gift card to spend at businesses near him. What a fun (and tasty) way to give back to our local communities!

 Donations for October

The Community Service fund increased by $3,092.50 in October 2020 thanks to our employee contributors. Donations to outside organizations were suspended during much of 2020. As noted in the President’s Column, requests for contributions are now being accepted for funds to be distributed in December 2020. Please be assured that all employee assistance requests will be kept confidential. If you know of a co-worker in need of assistance, please complete and submit a request form (available via Pinnacle or by emailing Michele Collins).

Infosys Pedestrian Bridge Rises in Indianapolis

A superstructure for a new magnificent pedestrian bridge over High School Road, north of Sam Jones Expressway, in Indianapolis is now in place. American Structurepoint provided structural engineering services and served as engineer of record for the new pedestrian connector. We also provided construction solutions services. The new bridge will connect a renovated parking structure to the Infosys US Education Center campus under construction at the old Indianapolis International Airport property.

The structural steel and metal deck for the bridge was fully assembled on-site on the ground, and the approximate 120-ton structure was then lifted as one piece by two cranes and set in place. Thirteen American Structurepoint employees were there to witness the event: EJ Mehboob, Jerica Barlow, David Clark, Joe Dubyel, Andrew DeWilde, Rex Lonyo, Krista Lawson, Casey Lynch, Matt Moore, Kristina Mudd, Luke Nisley, Kate Oliver, and Ben Wagner.

Due to its unique skewed-arch geometry, curved plan, and tapered-elliptical bridge pier, this 195-foot bridge, comprising a 170-foot span and 25-foot cantilever, not only serves as a pedestrian connector, but also as an architectural statement piece for the new Infosys campus. Great job, everyone!

Bridge Slide Goes Smoothly at Newman Road Underpass Project

A complicated railroad bridge slide went off without a hitch at the Newman Road Underpass Project in West Lafayette at the end of August. We provided design and construction inspection services for this project with an aggressive schedule that replaces a one-lane, stone-arch railroad bridge with a modern bridge structure and reconstructs Newman Road from Benson Drive to SR 26. It also includes a new roundabout at SR 26 and Newman Road that opened to traffic July 15. The project provides a new gateway and safer access to the nearby 176-acre Purdue Discovery Park District Aerospace.

This project involved multiple disciplines within our firm to collaborate and innovate during design and construction efforts.  These include the Land Surveying Group, Road Team Maurovich, Road Team Lau, Bridge Group, Traffic Engineering Group, Environmental Services Group, Civil Engineering Group, Ohio Road Group, and Construction Solutions Group.  It also involved work-sharing between Indiana and Ohio design centers to make it a success.

Prior to the bridge slide, crews built a new bridge structure on temporary supports adjacent to the existing arch structure. Train traffic was then shut down for 106 hours to allow for the installation of the new bridge structure. After demolition of the original stone and concrete arch, operators slide the newly constructed bridge into place on new pile-supported precast end bents. Bridge Group Project Manager Robert Anderson, Field Manager Joe Dubyel, and Resident Project Representative Jon Baldry were onsite to ensure all went well during the bridge slide. The nearly 44-foot lateral slide was completed within about 90 minutes from start to finish. Check out a 53-second time-lapse video of the event. Substantial project completion should occur in late November/early December.

American Structurepoint Awarded FDOT D7 Dale Mabry Highway Design

Congratulations to our Tampa-based team on their first win with FDOT District 7! American Structurepoint was selected as the prime consultant for a 1.5-mile resurfacing design project on SR 573 (S. Dale Mabry Highway). The project will extend the service life of the existing pavement, resolve drainage issues, and improve safety through lighting, signal, and pedestrian accessibility enhancements.

Our project team is led by Project Manager Todd Ziegler and includes five specialty subconsultants providing drainage design, environmental services, structural design, survey, and utility coordination services. We will self-perform roadway, maintenance of traffic, traffic signal, signing and pavement marking, and lighting design, as well as providing public involvement support. We were selected for the project after a two-part evaluation process. Twenty firms submitted letters of response to the district, and four firms were interviewed.

Delivering Cool Content for Virtual Meetings

American Structurepoint staff continue to show their versatility and flexibility in delivering creative solutions for virtual public meetings. Here’s some scoop about solutions for Florida and Evansville and a virtual public meeting space.

FDOT Kepler Road Roundabout Video

Last month, we held our first virtual public meeting with FDOT District 5 for the SR 44 at Kepler Road Roundabout project. It includes a new 2-lane roundabout and about a quarter mile of roadway widening to install a two-way, left-turn lane on SR 44 in Volusia County, Florida.

The meeting showcased an impressive, must-see, 4K UHD (ultra-high definition) animation that our very own Senior Design Visualization Specialist Paul Jarboe created. The video is Paul’s first-ever 4K production and has four times the pixels that his usual 1080p HD videos do. 4K video delivers much clearer and sharper image viewing and playback for viewers. Paul gives special kudos to our IT support and staffers. Creation of the video occurred via Citrix and our state-of-the-art render farm with nine computer nodes all performing flawlessly! Check out the video here. Special thanks to Volusia County and the City of DeLand for their continued support as we advance the design of this project!

Refresh Evansville Project Video

Little did Evansville Area Supervisor Brian Fox know that his duties as a Refresh Evansville program construction manager would include narrating a video available via YouTube and public access TV. But that is exactly what’s happening in this pandemic era when public meetings are out and virtual communication is in.

Brian’s video contains a project overview, introduces the project team, and uses photos and graphics to give viewers a glimpse of what will happen when during the Sweeter Rotherwood Water Main Replacement project. Evansville Administrative Support Specialist Kristen Williams helped Brian create the video, available on the Evansville Water and Sewer Utility (EWSU) social media sites and the Refresh Evansville website. Brian says his team will continue to modify their efforts to the ever-changing conditions to ensure that EWSU customer concerns are addressed.

Virtual Open House Space

Our first virtual public meeting space is now live! Our Environmental Services and Marketing Services graphics team, along with Steve Albright in Architecture, created this interactive room that can be adapted for any virtual public meeting or open house. The virtual room allows users to pan around the virtual space and click hotspots to open or view boards, video presentations, comment forms, and more. Our first virtual open house contains info about the SR 37 and 186th Street Intersection Improvement project in Noblesville, Indiana, and includes a video presentation shot and edited by Krista Lawson. Check it out at this link.

Comments Off on Happy Retirement to Greg Kicinski

Happy Retirement to Greg Kicinski

After seven highly productive years of leading our Indianapolis Road Group, Greg Kicinski retired from American Structurepoint on August 21. Greg oversaw tremendous growth while leading the Road team. During his tenure, transportation revenues more than doubled from $14 million to $32 million. He also excelled at leadership and in mentoring many. Company president and COO Rick Conner praised Greg for his leadership and for enhancing the company’s reputation in the industry.

“I admire Greg the most for his managerial style and his demeanor. He has unquestionable professionalism and he also has the ability to hover at a much higher altitude than most engineers and can see the big picture of a project. You’ve touched a lot of projects, but the most important thing is you have touched a lot of people. Many of the successes of people here, at other firms, and at INDOT are because of you,” Rick said at Greg’s final group leader meeting.

Greg says that coming to American Structurepoint from INDOT was an honor of a lifetime. Greg plans to travel throughout September and upon his return look for space where he can pursue his other passion – portrait photography.  He hopes to open a studio in early 2021. From all of us at American Structurepoint, thank you, Greg, for all your leadership,  dedication, and for being a great mentor to so many in our industry. Here’s wishing you find the perfect place to open your photography studio.
