Eric Farny To Compete For Man Of The Year Honors

American Structurepoint nation, get ready to support Project Development Director Eric Farny (Indianapolis Road Group) early next year in his quest to become Man of the Year for the Indianapolis region of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS). The organization recently announced that Eric is one of over a dozen men and women who will be raising money for LLS in honor of local children who are blood cancer survivors. The fundraising event will take place February 18 through May 1, 2021. One of Eric’s goals is to raise enough funds so that his son, Noah, can be added to the LLS Children’s Initiative Portfolio in 2021 to honor his team’s effort to help people, especially children, with blood cancers. This specific initiative is a way for young patients to not only survive their cancer but thrive in their lives after treatment. For most pediatric blood cancers, the treatments are harsh and outdated. The long-term effects of current therapies can create severe life-threatening complications, which is why LLS is increasing their investment in pediatric research. Noah successfully completed treatment in 2019 and has been cancer-free for over a year.

Currently, Eric is working on putting together his fundraising plan and welcomes any ideas or leads for fundraising opportunities. The Man and Woman of the Year titles are award to those in each community raising the most money during the 10-week campaign. And in 2021, be watching the blog for updates on how you can get involved!

Peter J. Schickel Way Phase 2 Opens in Harrison County

Left to Right: Wing Lau, Ryan Cross, and Josh Culver get ready to greet people attending the ribbon cutting

Phase 2 of the Peter J. Schickel Way project is now open to traffic following an October 27 ribbon-cutting ceremony. It begins approximately one-half mile north of the I-64 interchange at Lanesville Road to Old Lanesville Road in Harrison County, Indiana. The construction involved 1.5 miles of new terrain roadway along with the construction of a new roadway bridge over the Norfolk Southern Railway.

The new roadway included 40 feet of asphalt pavement to accommodate two 12-foot driving lanes with 8-foot shoulders. A substantial amount of earthwork was required, including construction of an embankment over 35 feet high. Roadside ditches and cross culverts were constructed to convey runoff within the new terrain. The new bridge over the Norfolk Southern Railway is a single-span composite pre-stressed concrete I-beam bridge. The bridge construction includes H-piling, concrete sub and superstructure work, and the construction of MSE Walls adjacent to the railroad right of way. Josh Culver shared these facts about the project:

  • Embankment required 70,000 cubic yards of imported materials and moving 190,000 cubic yards of material onsite
  • 30 million pounds of asphalt (approximately 15,000 tons) used
  • 60,000 pounds of reinforcing steel for the bridge over the railroad

American Structurepoint provided professional services including survey, environmental services, roadway design, bridge design, right-of-way engineering, right-of-way services, and construction inspection over the past several years. We are currently designing phase 3 of the corridor. Construction for Phase 3 is anticipated to start in 2022. In total, Peter J. Schickel Way is an approximately 2.5-mile corridor consisting of three phases beginning at I-64 and extending northwest to SR 64.

DREAM Alive Career Day Goes Virtual

Every year, American Structurepoint hosts a career day for DREAM Alive Scholars at our Indianapolis design center. This year, along with most events in 2020, we had to create a virtual experience alternative. On Thursday, October 1, Derrek Day (Bridge Group), Miles Demerly (Road Group), Luke Kahren (Business Development Group), and Ryan Selby (Land Surveying Group) participated in a virtual career day via Zoom with Dream Alive scholars.

DREAM Alive then coordinated another virtual event with Harshman Magnet Middle School, where over 100 students participated in learning about business development, roadway engineering, architecture, land surveying, and bridge engineering. Students first watched short videos about the various career options at American Structurepoint and then chose which breakout room they wanted to join for a live Q&A session with our experts. While we are eager to be able to host students in our design centers again one day soon, we are looking forward to creating more virtual connections in the meantime.
