Posey County Unveils Western Bypass Plans

Posey County, Indiana residents are excited about plans for the long-awaited Western Bypass unveiled in June. The Western Bypass will route semi-truck traffic around the heart of downtown Mount Vernon and provide opportunities for new economic development.

The $22 million Phase I of the project will connect the existing William Keck Bypass to a Western Bypass running from SR 69 to Base Road. The project includes reconstruction of Base Road and an at-grade intersection at Lower New Harmony Road. Company President Rick Conner and Indiana Road Group Leader Wing Lau spoke at the unveiling ceremony during which American Structurepoint honored Posey County Commissioners President Carl Schmitz with the Champion of the Bypass Award for his eight years of persistence in pursuing the project. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2023.

IU Museum Showcases Glenn Close Costumes

Cruella De Vil fur fans take note – iconic costumes worn by actress Glenn Close are out of storage from the Indiana University Ruth Lilly Auxiliary Library Facility (ALF) expansion we designed and now on display. Fifty-six of Close’s movie and theatre costumes – including her red fur coat from the film “101 Dalmatians” – comprise “The Art of the Character” exhibit at the Sidney and Lois Eskenazi Museum on the Bloomington campus through November 14. Close chose IU to house her 800+-piece costume collection after learning about ALF’s climate-controlled, archival facilities. Our architecture team designed a state-of-the-art ALF expansion, completed in 2020, supporting three different environmental conditions. ALF is one of the few university facilities in the country that can safety store and preserve textiles, books, arts, and historical artifacts.

Parking Structure Project Underway At 16 Tech

First comes the infrastructure and innovation buildings, next comes the parking structure at 16 Tech. A June 23 groundbreaking ceremony marked the beginning of the construction of a parking structure for which we are providing architectural, civil engineering, land surveying, and structural engineering services. The 5-level parking structure will provide approximately 650 parking spaces for several current and future developments within the 60-acre innovation district in Indianapolis. The overall design accommodates the possibility of a future expansion to increase total capacity to approximately 975 parking spaces. Completion is scheduled for spring 2022.

Project Update: Astral At Franklin

The Astral at Franklin senior living project is coming to life, progressing nicely from renderings to construction in Franklin, Indiana. American Structurepoint provided architectural, structural engineering, and landscape engineering services for the facility offering 118 units for seniors at three stages in life. Our design provides sustainable and hospitality-driven alternatives in an urban farmhouse setting for 51 independent living units, 39 assisted living units, and 28 memory care units.

Similar to our Astral at Auburn senior living project that opened earlier this year, this facility is targeted toward seniors who want to retire in a small, charming city, outside a major metropolitan area. With units being available in March of 2022, Astral at Franklin will be a good addition for the seniors and the community.

Congrats to the two winners of the PointUP Happy Hour drawing – Anna Stachofsky-Menchaca and Natalie Kroger – two of our newest additions to the Planning + Economic Development Group. Both received a bottle of Hotel Tango 2021 Pride Vodka, distilled right here in Indianapolis. The Happy Hour event celebrated Pride Month. Our Community Service group and the event raised over $500 for the Indiana Youth Group, an Indianapolis-based organization creating safe spaces for LGBTQ+ teens since 1987. Additionally, a portion of the proceeds from every bottle of Hotel Tango 2021 Pride Vodka goes to the Modern Military Association of America, the nation’s largest organization of LGTBQ service members, military spouses, veterans, their families, and allies.

Community Service News

The Community Service fund increased by $2,988.50 in the first half of June 2021, thanks to our employee payroll contributors and the company’s dollar-for-dollar match.

Recent Donations

  • A $1,000 contribution was sent to Meals on Wheels Central Indiana. Meals on Wheels provides medically tailored meals to Central Indiana’s homebound community. Recipients are delivered two meals each weekday, delivered by volunteers.
  • A $1,000 contribution was sent to LifeCare Alliance. LifeCare Alliance is a “Meals on Wheels” provider for residents of Franklin, Madison, Marion, Champaign, and Logan counties in Ohio.
  • Dishwasher safe – The Ronald McDonald House of Central Indiana recognized our donation of funds for a new commercial dishwasher by running a photo on its social media feed in June. The dishwasher has a high-temperature fast cycle, allowing the facility to wash more dishes in less time. The Ronald McDonald House staff are using the dishwasher in their Meals That Heal program in which hot meals are prepared for family members staying at the facility while their child receives treatment at Riley Hospital For Children.

American Structurepoint projects and people appeared in the news media 17 times in June. Here’s a recap.

  • Several news outlets in Posey County reported on the unveiling of plans for the Western Bypass project we are designing. These included the TriState Homepage, Channel 14 News, and Channel 44 News. (Please see the article appearing elsewhere in the newsletter.)
  • Indianapolis Business Journal reported the news that American Structurepoint is designing several infrastructure and roadway improvements in the Twin Aire neighborhood of Indianapolis. The improvements are preparing for the opening of additional buildings at the nearby Community Justice Center.
  • Building Excellence Magazine published a glowing article about the new Loeb Stadium in Lafayette for which we provided architecture design services. Meanwhile, Stadium Journey.com published a strong review of Loeb’s design and amenities.
  • A public workshop to gather input about the Forward Kosciusko County initiative to update the county’s master plan caught the attention of the Ink Free Press in Kosciusko County. We are consulting on the plan along with Taylor Siefker Williams Douglas Design Group and MACOG.
  • The Fort Wayne Journal-Gazette reported on the approval of an $839,809 contract with American Structurepoint related to the Bass Road project for which we provided engineering design services.
  • Columbus Business First heralded the opening of a new wedding event venue, Edison 777 in the Italian Village area, for which we provided civil engineering services.
  • WRTV Channel 6 News in Indianapolis ran a feature store about DREAM Alive that mentioned our work with program scholars.
  • ABC6 News in Columbus reported about a new affordable site, Sinclair Family Apartments, in North Columbus for which we are providing civil engineering, land surveying, and road services.
  • Indy Midtown Magazine reported that the Purple Line bus rapid transit project connecting Lawrence with downtown Indianapolis will receive $250 million in federal funding. Meanwhile, Building Excellence in Design and Construction Magazine published an account of a webinar where details about the Purple Line project were shared. We are providing program management services to Indianapolis DPW for the Purple Line.
  • The Indianapolis Business Journal reported that the Noblesville City Council approved an $18.6 million bond anticipation note to pay for the preliminary costs of Phase One of the Pleasant Street extension project for which we are providing roadway design services. Phase One runs from 11th Street to River Road.
  • The Lafayette Journal & Courier told its readers the city has hired American Structurepoint to do engineering work for converting Third and Fourth streets from one-way to two-way streets in the downtown area. We previously did the feasibility study for the conversion.
  • Current in Westfield reported on the city council’s unanimous approval to revoke a proposed ordinance to terminate the interlocal agreement with the Indiana Department of Transportation to widen SR 32. The SR 32 project, for which we are providing engineering design services, can now proceed.
  • Details about the SR 37 project between Fishers and Noblesville in Hamilton County, Indiana, comprised a good portion of the annual State of the County address highlighted in the Hamilton County Reporter.
  • Terminal, the AIM newsletter, published an article touting our roundabout expertise.

Lafayette Public Safety Building Breaks Ground

Public safety facilities in Lafayette will be seeing a significant upgrade now that construction is underway for a new downtown Public Safety Building and Parking Garage. American Structurepoint is providing civil, structural, and architectural design services for a 70,000-sft, 4-story building housing the Lafayette Police Department headquarters. Police personnel will receive an improved and more spacious work environment, and the building features state-of-the-art technology such as a real-time crime center that will provide more data points to evaluate during major incidents.

The design team collaborated with city and police officials to incorporate public spaces and ample access to natural daylight into the project design. A 2-story glass atrium opens directly to the public, and an outdoor terrace connects the street level with a rooftop landscaped plaza. The landscaped plaza is directly adjacent to a community room. Together, these spaces can host a variety of meetings, events, and public gatherings. Also included is a new connecting parking garage with approximately 468 spaces for City staff and the public. Construction is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2023.

Eric Farny Achieves LLS Man of the Year Status

Congratulations to Eric Farny for achieving Man of the Year honors in the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) annual philanthropic campaign to support blood cancer research. Eric participated in this fundraiser to raise money for pediatric cancer research in the name of his son, Noah, who was diagnosed with lymphoma in 2019. Noah’s illness and subsequent recovery inspired Eric and Team NoahStrong to raise over $155,000 for LLS in the 2021 campaign. Eric also received the Citizenship Award for Mission Integration, and one of his team members received the award for top overall team member for money raised. Overall, the Indianapolis market raised $880,000.

A hugely grateful Eric thanks the American Structurepoint family for their support. “It was an honor to represent the LLS organization and not only help raise money, but awareness for blood and pediatric cancers. I cannot thank everyone enough for the support you have shown for this campaign. YOU are all the reason that I had the privilege of receiving this award and being a representative for pediatric cancer patients, and YOU will be the reason that future generations will be able to defeat this disease.”

Construction Solutions Swings Into High Gear

Summer is the busiest time of year for our Construction Solutions Group, and 2021 is no exception. For the third consecutive year, the group is employing more than 100 field staff. In Indiana, new hires include 25 new or returning employees and 12 interns, as well as two office borrows. In Ohio, new hires include eight new or returning employees. Another big step for the team includes beginning the FDOT certification process so that we can win construction inspection work in the Sunshine State.

Our construction inspectors are spread from one corner of Indiana to another and equally busy in Ohio. Here are just some of the CI highlights for the season.

Environmental Services Helps Promenade Park Become Finalist For Prestigious Award

The Environmental Services Group’s contribution to Fort Wayne’s transformative Promenade Park project is receiving recognition from one of the world’s most prestigious award programs – the 2021 Urban Land Institute’s (ULI) Americas Awards for Excellence competition. The project is among 23 impressive developments chosen as finalists in the competition that includes projects from the US, Canada, and Mexico. Winners will be announced later this summer and will go on to contend for the even more prestigious ULI Global Awards for Excellence.

American Structurepoint completed environmental studies and permitting for the $20 million Wayne Riverfront Promenade that opened in August 2019. The park on the north and south side of St. Marys River in downtown Fort Wayne has become a central gathering place for the community and visitors alike, helping to create a sense of place while also revitalizing the riverfront into a destination spot. The park features a band shell for concerts, a pavilion with a brewery and beer garden, gardens, a creek bioswale, a tree trail, fountain, fire features, and amphitheater.

Company Takes Top Spots on IBJ’s Largest Ongoing Projects List

American Structurepoint projects take the top three spots on a list of metro Indianapolis’s largest ongoing construction projects published by the Indianapolis Business Journal! Five other American Structurepoint projects appear in the top 25. The list ranked projects by estimated costs and were ongoing as of March 1, 2021. Read on for the details.

  1. I-69 Finish Line – American Structurepoint is providing engineering services for the last leg of converting SR 37 between Johnson County and I-465 to I-69 interstate standards. The project also includes reconstruction and widening of a portion of I-465.
  2. Community Justice Campus – American Structurepoint is part of a team providing structural engineering and roadway infrastructure design services for the 50-acre campus.
  3. 16 Tech Innovation District – The company has provided roadway, utility infrastructure, civil engineering, and structural engineering services for the innovation district on the northwestern edge of downtown Indianapolis
  4. SR 37 Corridor, Hamilton County – Coming in at number 14, this project set to finish in 2023 converts 2 miles of SR 37 to a 4-lane expressway with four-grade-separated interchanges between 126th and 146th Streets. We designed two of the four interchanges and are providing program management for the entire project.
  5. I-65 Added Travel Lanes, Boone County – We provided roadway design services for this project ranked 18th on the list.
  6. AllPoints Midwest Building 12, Plainfield – Ranked 22nd, we provided civil engineering services for this state-of-the-art 517,220-sft warehouse in the AllPoints Midwest industrial park just west of Ronald Reagan Parkway and the Indianapolis International Airport.
  7. Infosys US Education Center, Indianapolis – This project, ranked at number 24, includes several infrastructure projects and a new pedestrian bridge to the education center located at the former Indianapolis International Airport.
  8. Mohr Logistics Park Lot 6, Whiteland – We provided civil engineering services for this one million-sft speculative warehouse project ranked at number 25.
