Congratulations to Krista Lawson (Marketing Services Group), the recipient of the 2019 Community Service Volunteer of the Year Award. Krista was chosen from a group of 10 awesome nominees. The Community Service Board considered various criteria including continuing participation, generating enthusiasm, and emulating the community service motto of “Make a Point, Give Back.” Krista devoted countless hours in 2019 documenting Community Service events, fundraisers, and activities through photography and video. We congratulate Jessica Stapleton on her promotion to manager of right-of-way engineering services within the Indiana Survey Group. Jessica has been with American Structurepoint for nearly 14 years and has worked on a variety of public- and private-sector projects. Over time, Jessica began concentrating on right-of-way engineering and soon excelled. Her knowledge and experience in right-of-way engineering has earned her a tremendous amount of respect from clients and staff. Moving forward, Jessica will be coordinating a variety of tasks, such as supervision, scopes, fees, schedules, and parcel staking and will be the initial point of contact for right-of-way engineering needs in the Hoosier state.

Kudos to the Columbus team for breaking into the top 10 of top Central Ohio engineering firms for the first time ever! The Columbus design center leapt to ninth place on the list of Largest Central Ohio Engineering Firms as ranked by the Columbus Business First weekly newspaper and website. This is up five slots from 2018. The list ranks firms by 2019 consulting engineering billings from Central Ohio offices. Congratulations to all Columbus employees!

An engaging lunch and learn gave attendees many tips for building meaningful, diverse connections at work and in your profession. The one-hour “Network Beyond Bias” presentation identified effective networking strategies that help you be more inclusive. One way, said presenter and certified change practitioner Amy Waninger, is to network like a CHAMP, which is an acronym for five people you need in your network. CHAMP stands for a customer, someone you helped get a job or hired, an associate, a mentor to you, and a protégé you’ve helped. Comments Off on Project Lead the Way Students Shine in National Spotlight
We salute students from a Project Lead the Way (PLTW) class (funded by American Structurepoint) who rocked the house at a recent national PLTW Summit! Students from James A. Garfield School 31 in Indianapolis were the only elementary school students in the nation chosen to share their stories of the difference PLTW made for them.
The students presented to more than 800 conference guests that included Pre-K-12 educators, students, university leaders, and business and industry leaders.
“This is our first year as a PLTW school and it’s fantastic,” the four scholars proclaimed in unison. Another student said, “Before Project Lead the Way, I didn’t know what an engineer was, but now I know what I want to be when I grow up …a mechanical engineer.”

The Community Service fund received payroll contributions totaling $3,128 in February 2020, and the company match brought us to $6,256 in incoming funds for the month. We have 131 employee contributors! Organizations recommended by our staff are the beneficiaries of these funds.
Commitment forms are available via Pinnacle if you would like begin contributing, or to change your existing commitment. If you have a suggestion for an organization that could use a boost of volunteers or a financial contribution, please share it with the Community Service board. A donation request form is available via Pinnacle.
Recent Donations
ICAN Visits Dayspring Center – Your donation of $770 funded a visit from ICAN dogs to children currently living at Dayspring Center. ICAN is an organization that provides foundation life skills to inmates as they train assistance dogs, who are then placed to assist individuals with disabilities. Additionally, Community Service donated $500 to Dayspring Center, an Indianapolis organization that assists homeless families. That donation will be used to provide items from the organization’s wish list that includes towels and washcloths; sheets, blankets, and pillows; and diapers, socks, and children’s underclothing.
Briezy’s Bunch – Briezy’s Bunch provides financial assistance to individuals with epilepsy when their insurance companies deny coverage for critical care needs. This includes seizure monitoring devices, adaptive equipment, emergency medication funding, and other neurology-recommended needs that insurance companies choose not to cover. The Indianapolis organization received a $2,000 donation at the recommendation of the Investigative Group’s Tom Leahy.
GiGi’s Playhouse – GiGi’s Playhouse is a national organization that delivers free educational, therapeutic-based, and career development programs for individuals with Down syndrome, their families, and the community. A $500 donation was made to the GiGi’s Playhouse location in Indianapolis at the recommendation of Joe Dubyel from the Construction Solutions Group.
Children’s Heart Foundation – The Children’s Heart Foundation funds congenital heart defect (CHD) research. The organization drives breakthroughs that have improved survival rates, longevity, and quality of life for individuals living with CHDs. In recognition of American Heart Month, $250 each was donated to the Ohio and Texas regions (both regions with American Structurepoint design centers).
Riley Hospital for Children – Sometimes physical therapy means thinking outside of the box, and the staff at Riley in Indianapolis felt that a cornhole game could provide enjoyable lessons to their patients. American Structurepoint purchased boards and bags, delivered in February by the Civil Engineering Group’s Michael Watts. The staff at Riley shared photos with us of a 14-year-old patient with conversion disorder who worked on higher-level balance skills by picking up and throwing bags.

Motorists are traveling safer and more efficiently upon the opening of the 96th Street and Keystone Parkway interchange in Carmel in early January. The $40 million project converted a dangerous, traffic-signal intersection at the Marion-Hamilton County line to a bridge overpass/roundabout interchange that significantly improves mobility and public safety. The new bridge overpass allows traffic on Keystone Parkway to travel without stopping, and 96th Street is now a roundabout. American Structurepoint provided program management, design review services, and construction inspection for the project.

Check out the early steel skeleton of the new Loeb Stadium rising in Lafayette. Construction crews are working throughout the winter to build the $20 million multi-purpose stadium designed by our Architecture + Interiors Group. Our architects took inspiration from the stadium’s original 1940’s Art Deco design, using exposed steel and traditional brick façade for the new stadium. Completion is expected in December 2020. Clean water is now flowing in the Dak Lap community in Dak Nong, Vietnam, thanks to a new water well dedicated in Joe Grinstead’s name. The well commemorates the memory of Joe Grinstead, a beloved member of the American Structurepoint family who passed away in April 2018. The Widow’s Mite Experience of Indiana partnered with the Christian Broadcasting Company’s Clean Water Project to build well number 67694. Previously, the 512 villagers depended on water from shallow open wells that were dirty and easily contaminated. The new well is 262 feet deep and is producing clean, plentiful water.
