Promotion News: Congrats to Matt Wright

We congratulate Matt Wright on his promotion to federal sector leader within the Architecture + Interiors Group. Having worked with Dan Weinheimer and other group leaders for the past several years, Matt is stepping into the federal sector role upon Dan’s retirement. His niche expertise in designing secure spaces for top-secret operation centers and research facilities has given us a competitive advantage in both the federal and higher education markets. Matt is also part of the overall company federal practice that has won work in 33 states over the past five years, and he will continue to work with our Civil, Structural, and Planning groups in the pursuit of multidisciplinary projects that showcase our company’s strengths. Matt is an extremely capable project manager and has become adept at steering through the extensive list of federal agencies and programs to find effective opportunities for the group and our company. We wish Matt continued success in his new role.

Reva Derhammer Becomes Company’s First WELL-Accredited Professional

Join us in congratulating Reva Derhammer for earning her WELL Building Standard Accredited Professional (WELL AP) credential! Reva is one of less than 10 people who currently hold this credential in Indiana.

The WELL Building Standard® is a performance-based system for measuring, certifying, and monitoring features of the built environment that impact human health and well-being, through air, water, nourishment, light, fitness, comfort, and mind. Acquiring this building standard certification is an increasingly popular request among clients and will become even more important post-COVID.

As our first employee to obtain this credential, Reva will serve as an asset within the Architecture + Interiors Group, and companywide, for how to create spaces that improve occupant health and for explaining the importance, using data driven information, of implementing these practices.

Way to go Reva! We look forward to seeing the impact of these happy, healthy buildings.

Environments For Aging Magazine Features Column By Vanessa Shumate

Senior Project Architect Vanessa Shumate, besides being a talented designer and dedicated mentor, now is a published author detailing her passion for designing senior-living facilities. Editorial leadership at Environments for the Aging Magazine asked Shumate to write a first-person essay for their “The Spark” column appearing in the Summer 2020 issue. The Spark shares personal accounts that inspire individuals to dedicate their careers to improving environments for seniors.

Vanessa tells of helping her mother care for her grandparents so they could continue to live in their Eastern Kentucky 1900s-era farmhouse rather than move into a senior-care facility. Her experiences at a very young age inspired her to design award-winning communities where seniors live active lives.

“As I grew up, I continued to think about the lessons I learned on that farm and the resources required to help individuals stay active and free of limitations as they age. I’ve taken all the lessons from my grandparents and from working in a church environment and applied them to the projects I design,” Shumate wrote. You can check out the entire column here.

Hardik Shah and Family Make Difference With COVID-19 Relief

Raahill Shah, singer/songwriter

Traffic Engineering Group Leader Hardik Shah and his family are using fundraising and music to make a meaningful difference in lessening the impact of COVID-19 in people’s daily lives. One effort is a campaign via GoFundMe to raise $5,000 to help feed families and obtain much-needed medical supplies and PPE worldwide.  Fund donations will be split evenly among five organizations:

  • Feeding America
  • The World Health Organization’s COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund
  • UNICEF USA
  • Doctors Without Borders
  • No Kids Hungry

The fund has raised nearly $1,000 to date, and Hardik’s goal is to raise $5,000 by year’s end. “Myself and my wife, Hardi, know this is just a small drop in the bucket, but every drop adds up to making an ocean of difference for the greater good of humanity,” Hardik said. If you would like to contribute, visit his GoFundMe page.

Not to be outdone, Hardik’s 9-year-old son, Raahil, wrote his very first song for his piano class that caught the attention of Fishers Mayor Scott Fadness. Raahill’s video of the song “Hope” soon found its way to the Mayor Fadness’ Facebook page as well as other social media platforms. The video eventually received over 1,000 views. The song’s lyrics tie in to Gov. Eric Holcomb’s #InThisTogether campaign promoting social distancing and curbing COVID-19 cases. You can take a listen to the video here.

Nevil Gomes’ Research Paper Gets Published

Our very own Nevil Gomes, EI (Indianapolis Bridge Group) recently had his research paper published in the ASCE journal! This research, part of his graduate degree at the University of Cincinnati, explores the use of beam stiffeners to strengthen corrugated plate structures using a software called CANDE (Culvert ANalysis and DEsign).

The paper recommended various ways to design and analyze of culverts. The study found that it is possible to design lighter, longer, and more cost-effective structures by using stiffened plates. As of August 5, the paper has been downloaded 28 times. Check it out here: https://bit.ly/2ZNZF9T

Great Co-Op Experience = Award Nomination

Recently hired engineer Michael Roche (Columbus Civil Engineering Group) thought so much of his summer 2019 co-op experience that he nominated American Structurepoint for a major award given by the Ohio University.

Mike submitted the company for the 2020 Engineering Career Services Employer of the Year Award. Students having a fantastic engineering co-op or internship stint submit award nominees, offering details about their recruiting, mentoring, work, and networking experiences. Mike started his co-op in May 2019 and continued working through the summer and fall. He started working part-time in January 2020. Senior Project Manager Ben Miller was his supervisor throughout.

Here’s an excerpt from his nomination to OSU.

“The co-op experience American Structurepoint provided was as realistic as you can get. I was able to work hands on with real projects and see the work I completed be implemented into real-life scenarios. Throughout my time, I received supervision and mentorship from every single person in my group.”

Although we didn’t win the OSU award, we won something better – a full-time employee! Michael began his American Structurepoint career in May.

The COVID-19 virus has brought a lot of uncertainty to our world, and some temporary changes have been made to our Give Back campaign in response.

  • First, the company match to employee donations has been temporarily suspended; we will be relying on your generous contributions.
  • Secondly, we are prioritizing contributions to the American Structurepoint family. Immediate consideration will be given to requests for assistance for employees and their families. Requests for contributions in the other five giving categories (families/children, elderly, education, armed/civic services, and emergency/shelters) will be held for consideration after the health and economic crisis has passed.
  • As always, commitment forms are available via Pinnacle if you would like to begin contributing, or make a change to your existing commitment.

Greg Kicinski Announces August Retirement

Many congratulations goes to Greg Kicinski who will retire from American Structurepoint in August after seven years of leading the Indianapolis Road Group.  During his tenure as group leader, our companywide transportation revenues have grown from $13.9 million to $31.6 million under tremendous geographic expansion that now serves four states.  We are sad to see Greg retire, and we will miss his leadership.

Greg is a giant in the industry, spending most of his career at INDOT in leadership roles before joining American Structurepoint to lead our Indiana Road Group. In his role here, the Indy Road Group has grown steadily in both revenue and staff and continues to be one of the leading design groups in the state. Greg has enriched our staff, provided leadership and mentorship, and shared his great knowledge and experience in the industry, and especially of our #1 client, INDOT.

Greg also took on the important role of managing the staff sharing among the Indiana, Ohio, Texas, and now Florida road design groups. With his dedication, demeanor, and always-positive attitude, he has the knack of bringing out the best in the people with whom he interacts.

Greg, congratulations on your retirement!  Your guidance, wonderful attitude, and great leadership and wisdom will be missed by the American Structurepoint family and the overall Indiana transportation industry.  We wish you the best. Enjoy your well-deserved retirement!

Celebrating June’s Big Wins

We continue to celebrate big wins. Here’s a recap about June’s major wins.

  • Texas On-Off System Bridge Replacements – American Structurepoint was selected as the prime provider to prepare plans, specifications, and estimates (PS&E) and related documents for on- and off-system bridge replacement projects in TxDOT’s Fort Worth and Dallas districts. This marks the second bridge design contract we have been awarded by TxDOT in 2020!
  • Olentangy Trail, Northmoor Park to Clinton Como Park – We were chosen to provide design and engineering services for a 0.6-mile-long bike/pedestrian improvement project for the final link of the 14-mile-long Olengtangy Trail in Columbus, Ohio. The trail is the most traveled greenway trail in Central Ohio. This new segment will cross the Olentangy River and provide a connection to the new OhioHealth headquarters, which is Central Ohio’s largest hospital system.
  • Dearborn County, Indiana Bridge Placement – American Structurepoint was selected for design services to remove and replace Dearborn County Bridge No. 33 with construction to begin in 2024. The team will include transportation, environmental, survey, utility coordination, and right-of-way services. Construction is estimated at $1.7 million.
  • Camargo Canyon Pump Station Elimination – We are leading a team of engineers to design a new 8-inch gravity sewer solution for the Camargo Canyon pump station, within the jurisdiction of the Metropolitan Sewer District of Greater Cincinnati. The project will eliminate a lift station and force main nearing the end of its useful life. American Structurepoint will provide detailed design, environmental analysis, constructability review, and all permitting for the project.
  • City of Muncie On-Call Inspection Services – American Structurepoint was selected to provide construction inspection services for various transportation, sidewalk, and trail projects throughout this Indiana city as needed. Types of projects include resurfacing, full-depth reclamation, culvert replacements, new sidewalks, and trails.
  • Travis County, Small Projects Pre-Qualified Lists – With this selection, American Structurepoint is now qualified to work on Travis County, Texas transportation projects with a fee of less than $500,000. This means we are on the county’s prequalified list for civil engineering projects and will be awarded future contracts based on our qualifications.
  • INDOT’s LaPorte District for Right-of-Way Plan Development and Title Research Services – Our tasks may include right-of way plans, title research, legal descriptions, route survey plats, or right-of-way parcel plats. Conner Brintlinger Reflects on D-Day Anniversary

Director of Business Development and External Affairs Conner Brintlinger provided a heartfelt reflection to The Columbus Dispatch regarding the June 6 anniversary of D-Day. In 2019, Conner traveled to Normandy, France, for the 75th anniversary of the historic military operation during which US, British, and Canadian forces landed simultaneously on five separate beachheads in Normandy. On the morning of June 6, Conner walked down to Omaha Beach at 6:30 a.m., the exact time the amphibious assault began in 1944. He took in the sights and met several surviving veterans of that battle.

“My trip to Normandy was life-changing,” Conner says of his journey. “I consider it an obligation and duty to share the stories of the veterans I met so we never forget the sacrifices that were made.” You can read Conner’s entire column at this link.
