Our Newman Road Underpass project is a major award winner! The Indiana American Public Works Association (APWA) named it the 2020 Public Works Project of the Year in Transportation, and the project now moves on to compete for a national APWA award. The project met several award criteria: enhancing public safety, using innovative construction techniques, improving access to the growing Purdue Discovery Park District Aerospace, and providing opportunities for job growth and economic development to the Purdue University and West Lafayette communities.
Project elements included demolishing a 1-lane, 100-year-old, stone-arch railroad bridge structure and using a bridge-slide technique to erect a new modern bridge structure. It also included reconstructing and widening Newman Road from Benson Drive to SR 26 and adding a dual-lane roundabout at SR 26 and Newman Road.
Multiple American Structurepoint disciplines collaborated during design and construction to make this project a reality, including the Maurovich and Olson Road teams, as well as the Bridge, Traffic Engineering, Environmental Services, Civil Engineering, Ohio Road, Land Surveying, and Construction Solutions groups. It also involved work-sharing between the Indiana and Ohio design centers. Congratulations to all involved in the project’s design and construction, and to all those collaborating with Purdue University on the award submissions to the state and national AWPA organizations.
