Scholars from the DREAM Alive program visited American Structurepoint to learn about the various career possibilities at American Structurepoint. Led by Brandon McClung (Road Group), Mike Maurovich (Road Group), Derek Urban (Environmental Services Group), and Ryan Selby (Land Surveying Group), the HL Harshman Magnet Middle School students were exposed to a host of topics. Each presenter engaged the scholars on subjects related to their expertise. As a past DREAM Alive volunteer, Brandon shared his connection to the program and his role in the Road Group; Mike focused on what a road engineer designs. Derek talked about where the water you flush down the toilet goes, where our tap water comes from, and how those things affect the environment and daily life. He brought his presentation to life with a short demonstration to show the concept of water pressure and filtering dirty water. Ryan discussed his role as a land surveyor and demonstrated the use of survey equipment. In a single afternoon, these DREAM Alive scholars received a comprehensive overview of a sampling of our services. Our staff is always excited to share their passion with others and help answer questions about how to pursue the same career path.
The DREAM Alive team was grateful for American Structurepoint hosting the event. “The new space was awesome, you graciously cared for our scholars with food, and the guys presenting did a fabulous job (they were probably the best speakers we’ve had all year share with our scholars). Brandon always does such a great job starting things off and connecting with the kids, which really sets a great tone for the entire trip,” Eric Muller, DREAM Alive executive director.
