Hammond residents and neighbors turned out in droves to see their new $17 million, 135,000-sft Sportsplex & Community Center that opened to great fanfare on September 27. American Structurepoint designed this exceptional facility in conjunction with City of Hammond officials to spark economic development in the area, similar to what the Grand Park Sports Campus has done for Westfield, Indiana. We provided a full range of professional services that included architecture, interiors, structural engineering, and civil engineering services.
The complex features the following:
- 6 basketball courts (with practice cross court rims)
- 10 volleyball courts
- 2 regulation-sized indoor soccer fields
- 6 indoor batting cages
- Quarter-mile, upper-level running/walking track
- Community room to host city events
- Concession area
- General offices
Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr. stated that the facility will be open to the public Monday through Thursday. The weekends will draw people from the Chicago and Northwest Indiana area attending regional and national amateur and traveling sports league competitions. The mayor also noted that the sportsplex is completely booked every weekend through mid-June 2019.
