Kudos to the American Structurepoint engineering team responsible for designing the Elm Street Railroad Grade Separation project. The project received an Honor Award in the 2021 ACEC Ohio Engineering Excellence Awards! Our engineers partnered with the City of Lima, ODOT, and the Federal Highway Administration to design the realignment and widening of Elm Street and transformed a nearby six-leg, signalized intersection into a four-leg roundabout. Elm Street was lowered 20 feet below an existing at-grade railroad crossing to allow for continuous traffic flow when trains are stopped or slowed on the railroad tracks. We also designed a single-span deck girder bridge structure to carry rail traffic over Elm Street. Additionally, several aesthetic elements were incorporated that harken back to Lima’s rich railroading history. The project included extensive landscaping, decorative streetlamps, and 6-foot sidewalks to create a welcoming entrance into Lima’s downtown area. Way to go Ohio team!
