Blair Kelly (right) as Von Hussler
Blair Kelly (Utility Infrastructure Group) lives a double life – an engineer by day and an actor/dance man by night in one of Indianapolis’ top holiday shows – “Mary Poppins” at the Civic Theatre in Carmel, Indiana. As an ensemble member, Blair had to learn eight songs, four dances, and ten lines to appear in five scenes throughout the show. Blair, who started at the Indianapolis Department of Public Works in March working on the stormwater management team, reports he is having a blast reliving his theater days of yore. “I did a lot of theatre in high school and thought, ‘what the heck, this will be fun,’ and I auditioned for the production.”
Blair‘s lines comes as Von Hussler, an evil German banker looking for a loan. He also portrays a chimney sweep in several musical numbers.
Blair has been in rehearsals since October, and even missed the American Structurepoint holiday party because it coincided with opening weekend. Blair is in five productions a week, Thursday through Sunday, until the show closes on December 29. Blair urges people to attend. “It’s a fun, family show with big numbers and lots of tricks in show.” Spoiler alert: Mary Poppins actually flies across the stage. Blair’s performing background also includes a stint as a mascot intern for the Indianapolis Colts. Read about his mascot days at this link.
