Community Service Hub: DREAM Alive 30-Hour Fast and Community Day

Our DREAM Alive scholars need your support! They are collecting non-perishable food items for Gleaners Food Bank in preparation for their annual Community Day on May 16. The goals for this year’s project are:

  • Bring the corporate, nonprofit, and urban youth communities together to make an impact
  • Raise $15,000 for Gleaners Food Bank
  • Raise awareness of hunger in our community
  • Provide a valuable service learning opportunity for DREAM Alive scholars

This year over 100 students will roll up their sleeves to organize and lead the project, working alongside a number of companies (including American Structurepoint), their employees, and community leaders to support Gleaners Food Bank. Scholars are pairing with supporting companies to form ten teams to raise money for hunger relief and awareness through a 30-hour fast. The teams will come together at the end to volunteer at Gleaners Food Bank.

DREAM Alive is much more than an after-school tutoring service. The program strives to turn its scholars into future community leaders and philanthropists who understand the needs of their community and take action to address those needs. As a corporate partner, American Structurepoint encourages its employees to participate. Ways you can help:

  • Donate non-perishable food items or make a monetary donation to the food drive. Gleaners is in particular need of protein, including peanut butter, canned chicken, tuna, etc. The collection bin for non-perishable food donations will be in the 7260 elevator lobby until May 10. Monetary contributions can be made at the front desk.
  • Volunteer to fast along with the scholars from 3 p.m. May 15 to 5 p.m. May 16
  • Write a note to the scholars on our team at Harshman Magnet Middle School to encourage them during the 30-Hour Famine; you can send e-mails to [email protected]
  • Help out at Gleaners on May 16 from 3:15 p.m. to 5 p.m. You can join the scholars at the Colts Pavilion afterward for a dinner, catered by Jonathan Byrd’s, to break the fast.

If you’re interested in participating in the fast or volunteering at Gleaners on May 16, sign up online at www.dreamaliveinc.org or talk to Anitra Lewis (Accounting) or Margaret Kantz (Marketing Communications) for details.
