Surveyor By Day, Country Singer By Night

Project Manager Joe Hess is living his best life – surveying by day and singing lead by night with his country group, Joe Hess and the Wandering Cowboys. The busy band plays multiple gigs nearly every weekend throughout the Midwest. Joe describes the band’s sound like this: “We play traditional country with a modern sound. We try to stay relevant, but not lose what country really is.” Saturday, May 5, is a huge day for the group thanks to two high-profile shows. The band plays from 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the OneAmerica 500 Festival Mini-Marathon Post Race Party at Military Park in downtown Indianapolis. The event attracts more than 30,000 race participants as well as their family members and friends. Later that night, the band is opening for Corey Cox at Hi-Fi Indy in Fountain Square. Here are five things to know about Joe.

  1. Biggest musical influence: Garth Brooks
  2. Favorite song to sing: In Color by Jamey Johnson
  3. Second favorite song to sing: Folsom Prison Blues by Johnny Cash
  4. Why he sings: “I’ve tried to quit music several times, but it would be like quitting breathing for me. Music always comes back.”
  5. CD available: The group’s first EP, Chapter 1, is available on the band’s website. Joe is seeking out material for a second album.
