Columbus Wins Smart City Challenge

Congratulations to Columbus, Ohio, for winning the U.S. Department of Transportation Smart City Challenge. After ousting six other much bigger cities, including San Francisco and Denver, Columbus has won up to $50 million to help the city transition to a smart transportation system that uses technology. Central Ohio businesses and public organizations pledged another $90 million toward the initiative, making the total till $140 million. Columbus’s plan emphasized electric and autonomous transit, building a new infrastructure for electric vehicles, and creating a “smart corridor” to pair with the Central Ohio Transit Authority’s bus rapid transit line.
