With road construction season now in full swing, it’s only fitting that the May flashback review the $175 million Super 70 highway reconstruction project. The 2007 project encompassed a complete reconstruction and widening of a 6-mile stretch of I-70 from just east of the I-65 North split in downtown Indianapolis to slightly east of the I-465 East interchange.
The reconstruction project stood super in every way because of its size, complexity, and aggressive construction schedule. At the time, Super 70 was the single largest road construction project in INDOT’s history, encompassing the busiest section of Indiana highway carrying nearly 180,000 motorists every day. INDOT demanded that construction of 75 lane miles of new 16-inch thick concrete pavement, 28 new bridge decks, and wider, inside shoulders be built in just nine months to ease the motoring public’s commuting pain.
American Structurepoint rose to the occasion, successfully delivering three key pieces of the Super 70 puzzle. We began working on Super 70 in May 2005 when hired to develop front-end design/build scoping plans. These plans normally take two years to complete, but we did the work in just ten months.
Secondly, we completed an engineer’s report for Phase 2 to add travel lanes to I-70 and reconstruct the Keystone, Emerson, and Shadeland Avenue interchanges. Thirdly, we worked with Hetrick Communications to develop an extensive communications plan. We also designed $1 million in local improvement projects to increase capacity on streets that city leaders feared would become jammed with motorists attempting to avoid the construction zone.
Our design team received several awards for their Super 70 work, including the 2007 Indiana Civil Engineering Project of the Year, a 2008 Transportation Safety Achievement Award from the Institute of Transportation Engineers, and a 2008 Excellence in Concrete Pavement Award from the Indiana Chapter of the American Concrete Pavement Association.
