John “Couples” Nail (Road Group) broke the two-year spell of first-time players taking home the top prize in the American Structurepoint Masters Golf Tournament. Nail overcame a breezy, cool spring day at the SGA North Course (AKA North Patio) during the fourth and final round to shoot an overall final score of -17. Nail received a $100 Dick’s Sporting Goods gift card and the thrill of donning the coveted (and new!) green sweater, featuring an American Structurepoint lapel pin. Second place went to the 2015 champ, Larry “Kuchar” Bohannon (Survey Group), who finished three strokes off the winning pace with a -14. Nick “Michelson” Murphy (Road Group) was close behind in third place with a -12 score. Nate “Palmer” Harris (Survey Group) bagged rookie of the year honors by firing -1 score.
After the tournament, Nail reflected on his victory. “Whenever you win a tournament with a talented field such as this one, it is a humbling experience …. With other skilled players such as Larry, Tanner McKinney, Nick and Nate, you really have to bring your absolute best game to win,” Nick said. The fourth-year tournament participant attributed his win in part to studying Zen philosophy. “I think one thing that helped give me an edge on the field was reading some books by the Zen philosopher, Basho, throughout the week. Basho once wrote, ‘A flute with no holes is not a flute. And a doughnut with no hole is a Danish.’ He was a funny guy.”
