Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve Recognition
American Structurepoint received recognition from the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) at an awards banquet at the Marriott North Hotel in Indianapolis, Indiana, on May 4. Kirk Zecchini (Federal Group) nominated American Structurepoint for the highly competitive 2013 Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award, for which we have been named a Freedom Award State Semi-Finalist. Zecchini also nominated Vice President Mak Knowles for an “Above & Beyond Award” from ESGR, for which Knowles was recognized on behalf of American Structurepoint at the awards ceremony. The Above and Beyond Award recognizes American employers who provide extraordinary support and cooperation to their employees, who like the citizen warriors before them, have answered their nation’s call to serve. The award is given in limited numbers by the Indiana state committee. Indiana Secretary of State Connie Lawson was the guest speaker at the awards ceremony. More info can be found here: www.esgr.mil.

ACEC Ohio Recognizes MOT-75
Vice Presidents Bob Kuederle and Kent Moore and Frank Aransky (Columbus, Ohio, Transportation) represented American Structurepoint on March 14 when the firm’s I-75 Urban Freeway Widening, Phase 1B project was honored with an Outstanding Achievement Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies of Ohio during the 2013 Engineering Excellence Awards luncheon.
Previously, with only one through lane of traffic on I-75 in downtown Dayton, drivers dealt with rush-hour traffic backups, accidents, confusing merge patterns, and inadequate ramp spacing. Those who abandoned the freeway for local roads faced longer travel times and created wear and tear the roads were not designed for. As part of the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT)’s $483 million I-75 Modernization Plan, American Structurepoint performed roadway and bridge design for this $57 million improvement to add one through lane on I-75 and completely replace the existing pavement for a 1.33-mile section of I-75 at the US 33 interchange. Phase 1B included removing geometric deficiencies, replacing aging pavement, and updating entrance and exit ramps, as well as a complex maintenance-of-traffic plan, including the first Maintenance of Traffic Alternative Analysis (MOTAA) for a major ODOT project and the innovative “Buckeye Turnaround” for maintaining traffic on interstate ramps.
In addition, structures (13 new bridges, rehabilitation of seven bridges, and removal of three bridges) were designed for part-width construction to accommodate traffic using over 1,000 lft of temporary MSE wall, tied-back soldier pile and lagging, and sheet pile shoring. More than 2,000 feet of bridge length was eliminated, substantially decreasing future bridge maintenance and creating a cleaner, more aesthetic looking-corridor.
Collaborative efforts with ODOT District 7, the City of Dayton, Montgomery County, Sinclair Community College, Dayton schools, CSXT Corporation, and the Norfolk Southern Railway throughout design resulted in a smoother, safer traffic flow through the city. A special thanks to Aransky for exceling in his role as project manager. Thanks to him and his staff, this project has elevated the Columbus American Structurepoint office in Ohio and poised the firm for more high-profile transportation projects in the future.
Eskenazi Health Wins Nuvo Cultural Vision Award
Eskenazi Health, also called the New Wishard, has been honored with a 2013 Cultural Vision Award from Nuvo Newsweekly.
Nuvo reports that “the new hospital will not only be LEED certified for its green design features, but it will also feature a sky farm: a 5,000-square-foot rooftop garden, where fresh produce will help feed patients and staff. Specially, commissioned works of art will create a significant new public space throughout the hospital, and the Eskenazi Commons, out front of the building, will be a public place where human connections and relationships are encouraged and nurtured.”
American Structurepoint’s Transportation, Structural, and Civil/Site Groups, with assistance from many subconsultants and teaming partners, contributed to the overall functionality and aesthetic appeal of this new hospital and supporting infrastructure.
American Structurepoint’s Structural Group teamed with Ratio Architects and MEP engineer Loftus Engineering as part of a design team under executive architect HOK to design the 6-story ACB that will serve as the grand entrance to the Eskenazi Health hospital. American Structurepoint’s Structural Group also teamed with Blackburn Architects and mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineer BCCLT Consulting Engineers to design the Central Utility Plant (CUP), Chiller Boiler Plant (CBP), and site structures of the hospital campus. The Structural Group also effectively prepared and coordinated three separate Revit models for each of our three major building designs that were combined and coordinated through every level of design with the architectural and mechanical Revit models.
In addition, American Structurepoint was hired as the lead transportation/traffic design consultant on this project, teamed with HOK and BCCLT Consulting Engineers. Our team developed traffic models for multiple site options and performed capacity analysis for the internal and external intersections and roadway segments.
This has truly been a landmark project with which American Structurepoint has been involved.

ICACI Outstanding Achievement in Concrete
During the American Concrete Institute, Indiana Chapter’s (ICACI) Outstanding Achievement in Concrete 2013 Annual Meeting and Awards Program on April 10 in Indianapolis, Indiana, American Structurepoint, its clients, and subconsultants, were recognized with awards plaques for two recent projects. We were honored winning an Outstanding Achievement in Concrete for our Green Screen Parking Structure project in Columbus, Indiana (for the category of Transportation 2/Parking Structures), and our West Jackson Street Bridge #513 project won in the category of Transportation 1/Bridges.
MOT-75 Wins Outstanding Engineering Achievement Award at OSPE State Level
After having recently won at the Franklin County Chapter level, American Structurepoint will also be recognized with an Outstanding Engineering Achievement Award from Ohio Society of Professional Engineers & Engineers Foundation of Ohio at the state level for the I-75 Urban Freeway Widening, Phase 1B project. The award will be presented at an awards luncheon on June 15 at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio.
